Saturday morning I received a notice from my bank that my credit card had been fraudulently used to rent a car from Hertz. I called the bank, reported the charge, and concerned about a possible car theft in progress, was told to contact Hertz, which I did.

Twice. Both employees told me the billing office was closed and no one could take my complaint or provide any information until Monday, business hours. I asked both if they were concerned that a possible theft should wait two more days; neither cared. I called back my bank to cancel my card, just in case, and was glad I did!

In the meantime, my card was used a 2nd time fraudulently at a New York restaurant (I live in VA). In summary, someone has pirated my credit card info to make charges, including possible car theft, and could be well out of the country before the Hertz billing department comes back to work on Monday.

Location: Washington, District Of Columbia

We had a similar situation. Someone in Las Vegas got hold of our card number...

(we had been there a month earlier for a conference, and I doubt it was coincidence)... not our card, just the number, and rented a car with Hertz. We called as soon as the pending charge came through, and was told that the renter was out in the car as we spoke, and was enrolled in the "Hertz #1 Gold Program, and so had to be legitimate.

We reported it to our bank and cancelled our card, reported it to the local police, who reported it to the Las Vegas police, and nobody did anything.

So now we have over $500.00 in fraudulent charges, including a towing charge when the renter abandoned the car, that Hertz is going ahead with. :(

I spent this whole weekend on the phone with banks and credit companies too. After my wallet was stolen, the thief rented the car within a half hour.

I guess I'll call Hertz again on Tuesday.

I just want to make sure theres not a car out there that they will want to hold me accountable for. SO annoying.

Sorry to hear it! I wasted half my weekend dealing with my bank, forced to PROVE I was home in DC in my PJs and not stealing a car in NY.

I never wasted time with Hertz again.

Even if their rental car was used to conduct a felony and escape across the border on a Saturday, if Hertz doesn't care, why should I?

Was the weird charge on your card a small amount too?

Mine was, I had a charge of $1000 and an additional charge of $50. Sounds like someone out there has discovered a way to earn a living by stealing cars from Hertz! The Rat ***.
