I rented a car from Hertz at FLL in Florida. First of all, the pick up took forever. I told them 3 times that I did not want extra insurance, I was already covered. I did not take the fuel option.

Returned the car with tank full on Aug 3, 2012. The man at the drop off area told me that the system was down, everything was OK, but he could not give me a receipt showing charge details. He mentioned that I could check the status of my rental on the internet. I asked a couple of times to have a receipt, showing that the car was returned with full tank. He said it was not possible because system was down.

When I got my receipt, I got charged an extra $72 for fuel and service!! This is apart from the crazy airport taxes that I already knew that I had to pay. Seems like many people get this BOGUS fuel and service charge. I called back Hertz, the person at the other end did not ask for much details and did not dispute this. She said I'll get reimbursed in 3-5 business days. I need to follow up on this because I don't trust Hertz one bit. How can they get away with this? It's robbery, plain and simple! I think that the default shows that the car is returned with an empty tank, unless the person at the drop off area enters the info showing that the tank is full. They try it and if people don't check their receipts properly, they get away with it!

SHAME ON YOU, HERTZ! I'm never renting a car from Hertz again. It is a shame to rob your clients in this manner.

Monetary Loss: $72.

Location: Toronto, Ontario

They are still doing it several years later. It just happened to me in Phoenix.

It's been over a week and they still have not corrected the issue. I rent cars a few times a year and it's never going to be from Hertz again!

they are for sure scams. I returned with full gas but they still charged me $68.00 for the gas. they also charged me $25.00 toll fee which I never travel with the toll roads.

I just had the same thing happen at the San Diego Hertz location. I filled the car at a Shell station less than 2 miles from the airport and when I received my receipt via email, I noticed a $50 fuel charge.

I unfortunately didn't keep my receipt but a cell phone screen shot was enough to get them to reimburse the charge.

I'm glad it was easy to get the refund but you would think that if they were charging a fee, they would have some support or reasoning for it. It really does seem like they're just tacking on these fees and seeing what sticks.

Did me in Asheville N.C. the same way, returned full, fueled less than 1/2 mile away.

Did not get the fuel option @ reservation or car pickup.

$70 odd PLUS the $40 worth of gas I put in to top it up!!!

Asheville is an unattended drop off/pickup, aside the inside desk.

Never again, and I'll take every opportunity to bad mouth them also.

In every forum and website!

The Hertz customer service drones gave a pat answer explaining their fuel option policy.

Incedentally, the receipt shows the fuel charge and was put on there WITHOUT any of their staff checking the fuel gauge. Scam by either company policy or local staff.

Same problem at JFK in September 2012. They charged me $48 for 9 gallon of gas but the car has been refilled 10 miles before I drop it at the airport.

I called Hertz and they returned the money.

Keep your receipts always!!!

I just had the exact same thing happen in San Diego. I had almost $79 in fuel charges on my credit card.

I had copies of my fuel receipts including one for the morning of the rental return.

When I called, they immediately refunded the amount and did not ask to see my receipts or anything. I got the exact same response of 3-5 days for the credit.

Folks, please remember that if you use a credit card to pay for rentals to take advantage of it. I had the exact same thing happen (simple letter from Hertz after the fact with no documentation other than I owed another $50 in fuel charges) in Denver.

Instead of disputing this with Hertz, I called my credit card company. When I explained it, they didn't even blink in putting it into dispute and refunding the money.

Now Hertz needs to prove they are owed the money, not the other way around. When wronged, take control if possible.
