Recently I rented a car in the UK that was virtually new (about 1000 MIles). When I picked up the car there was no mention of the fact that there was no spare.

It is one of those cars that you see more and more of being sold where they are saving space and weight by eliminating the spare. However, I have one at home but they put run flat tires on the car to help you get to a service facility when a flat occurs. (In my case a 3 series BMW) The rental car had no spare and also did not have "Run Flat Tires". Probably to save Hertz money.

Well the left front tire went flat and in stopping and getting off the road the tire was torn apart. We were out in the middle of Wales (UK) and our only help was to call the service number that came with the rental agreement receipt. The number is transferred to a third party service provider who was very nice and said that a tow truck would arrive within the hour and would have instructions to take us to a tire shop that had the tires used on this rental car. About 70 minutes later a tow truck arrived and loaded our rental on the flat bed of the truck and put us in the cab a took off on a 50 mile drive to a small town that the driver had been instructed where they had found a tire dealer with the tires that we needed.

At this point we are about 3 hours into an adventure that I could have finished by installing a spare (if one had existed) and we could miles down the road to our original destination. When we arrived at the tire dealer they told us that they did not have the tire we needed for our rental car and that the soonest they could have one would be in 48 hours. The driver called Hertz road service and they had no idea as to what to do. By this point the driver just wants to get rid of this tow and get on with his business but instead suggests to Hertz that there is another Tire dealer that he had checked with and that they had the tire that we needed but they were 40 miles away.

Hertz said ok and off we went to Chester UK. The driver dropped the car off with us and the tire dealer replace the tire. He then asks me if I want to pay for this tire and I said NO Hertz said they an agreement with there shop and that it should be billed to that agreement. After another hour they finally got "Authorization" from Hertz for the tire and we finally took off on our own.

The entire process almost took us 7 hours and we missed reservations that we had at a hotel hundreds of miles from where we were and we were Pissed. Hertz is the worst and the Tow driver was the best for sticking with us. My issue is this. HERTZ never once told me about the no spare issue as I would never have taken this car.

Don't get me wrong, the car drove great and my only issue is that Hertz did not disclose to me about the NO spare situation. As a result we lost prepaid reservations as well an entire day wasted solving the problem that in my mind they created. I refused to pay for the tire because I thought my insurance might cover it. When the insurance told me that flat tires were NOT covered and I called Hertz and offered to pay for the tire and they told me that I would receive a bill for the tire.

THE NEXT THING THAT I KNOW IS THAT I GOT A DUNNING NOTICE FOR TIRE COLLECTION FROM HERTZ UK. I DON'T RESPOND WELL TO DUNNING NOTICES. I will never rent from Hertz again.

I am 77 years old and I have used them for my entire adult life both for personal and business purposes. Just an example of what they call Customer Service.
